Hook'em Horns!!

(October 10th, 2009 Texas Vs. Colorado)

My father is a big fan of soccer. He was a member of a small community soccer team until he bacame 50, and he woudln't be exhausted even though somebody makes him talk about soccer all day long. What I want to say is that my father is not the only person who is crazy about soccer in Korea. That is, soccer is one of the most popular sports among Koreans.

What about Texas in the U.S.A? Even though every person has his or her own preference about sports, nothing beats football, I guess. However, when I first saw football on TV, I couldn't understand why football is so popular in the U.S.A. Moreover, I couldn't get the rules exactly even though my brother tried to expain as much as he could. There was only one reason why I didn't understand the rules. To me, football was just a game, which is not interesting.

However, when I came to Austin, Texas, I came to know a lot of people living in Austin really love football and UT also has a great fooball team. That is, football is a part of thier community. I felt that they are really proud of thier football team. Moreover, when I went to the stadium to watch football game with my friends on October 10th, I felt that this just one game could make all Texans happy. It was an amzing experience. While watching that game, I realized that football was not a boring game at all. It was really fascinating.

Actually, I still don't know much about rules, but I sometimes talk about McCoy, the quarterback of UT with my friend. What's more surprising is that I somtimes read sports section in the Daily Texan that I was never interested at all.

  1. For many years, I was one of those crazy football fans. Having grown up in a small South Texas town with a powerful, winning team, EVERYONE followed football. If you didn't know the rules, you were looked at funny. I never missed a game although I wasn't in marching band or the pep squad.

The same held true when I was a UT student. During my time here, the Longhorns won the national champsionship. It was amazing, exciting, exhilirating!

Football has often been hailed as America's nationalism, mainly because the national anthem is sung before every game. All people,of all nationalities, of all walks of life, for those few moments honor the country and the flag. It still gives me goosebumps.

  2. Jiyeon, I have the same feeling about soccer in Texas!

Unfortunately, I have not visited the game, but once on Saturday I met the crowd going to the game. It was amazing...I just felt this magic spirit and strength! I realized how patriotic Americans are! I felt very excited about this occasional meeting.

I hope to have a chance to go to the game!

    ;)

  4. I always think that baseball, basketball, and football games are part of American life because of the movies I have seen.
Speaking of movies, I would recommend "Any Given Sunday", which is a movie about football. The speech by Al Pacino, who played a coach, in the movie was so touching. I really wanted to watch a football game after seeing the movie. However, I still haven't had a chance.
Probably, I should try to go to one football game. Moreover, I would see the movie again before go to the game.
